Care to describe the feeling/noise that this excessive play presented? Both sides? Miles on the car?

The best way to check is to jack up one corner of the car, grab the wheel at 3o’clock and 9o’clock, and try to shake it back and forth. If it moves at all either your bushings or tie rod ends are bad. To confirm which, you will need to lay under the car while someone else shakes the wheel to see where the play is.
Yes both sides are the same. I have 112k on the car but the problem has been there for over 10k miles.

I recently bought a 2006 GTI and am having similar issues. I changed 2 subframe bolts to get rid of a creaking noise but have noticed now the wandering effect when shifting gears and braking. Also when pulling into my garage at night there is a slight and abrupt bump that makes my front end feel loose.. almost like the engine and front of the car have come loose for a split second. Do you think this is associated? Also with the bad bushings is it likely this could be putting more tension on the subframe?

As I said, the best way to verify is to jack up the wheel and try to shake it by hand. If you have a helper… have them shake the wheel while you watch the bushings.
