DIY: Manual transmission fluid change
April 1st, 2008 Posted in 2.0T FSI, 2.5LTools/Items needed:
Jack
2x Jack stands
Wheel chocks
2.3L of gear oil (I used Motul Gear 300)
Drain tray
Transmission fill funnel
T20 screwdriver
3/8″ drive socket wrench
17mm socket wrench
Special transmission bit (www.germanautoparts.com)
Due to my intake and other things in the way, I added a little extension to the transmission funnel… this was just some extra silicon vac hose I had laying around.
Step 1: Engage parking brake and chock rear wheels.
Step 2: Jack up front end and secure on stands.
Step 3: Remove lower engine splash guard (8 T20 screws).
Step 4: Locate the transmission fill (top) and drain (bottom) plugs.
Step 5: Loosen and remove the fill plug.
Step 6: Position your drain tray beneath the drain plug, and loosen the plug.
Step 7: If you plan to take a used oil sample for analysis, have the sample bottle ready now. Remove drain plug and allow oil to drain completely.
Step 8: Thread the transmission drain funnel from above into the tranny fill hole.
Step 9: Wipe the drain area clean. Replace and tighten drain plug.
Step 10: Now its time to fill the transmission. Ideally this should be done on a level surface with the car lowered back onto its wheels. You’d then pour fluid in until it starts to drip back out the fill hole. Alternatively, I chose to keep the car jacked up and just add the amount of fluid called for in the manual, which is 2.3L
Step 11: Remove the fill funnel/hose and wipe the area clean.
Step 12: Replace and tighten the fill plug.
Step 13: Be sure to properly dispose of the used transmission fluid.
Step 14: Lower the car off the stands and enjoy.

Thanks!

It is a matter of personal preference… VW claims the OEM oil is lifetime.

My wife’s 2007 manual has 10 mm allen key bolts for the transmission fill and drain plugs.
Thanks for the DIY.

Yeah, that was apparently a running change. It can be hit and miss which one you have.
