DIY: Valentine V1 hardwire install

May 20th, 2008 Posted in Jetta/GLI, Rabbit/GTI

These instructions can be used to hardwire just about any aftermarket electronic device so that it will power on with the ignition.  The only difference is where you mount the device, and how you run the wire.

Tools required:
Trim tool -or- flathead screwdriver wrapped in electrical tape to protect interior pieces
T20 torx screwdriver

Optional:
Add-a-circuit -or- fuse tap
Double-sided mounting tape

Step 1: Open the fuse panel cover on the driver’s side of the dash.

Step 2: With the headlight switch in the off position; press the dial in and turn clockwise until it stops.  Then pull the headlight switch from the dash.

Step 11: Using your fingers and the trim tool, start tucking the wire up along the edge of the headliner.  Work your way across to the driver’s side A-pillar.

Step 14: Pull the trim piece back and work the wire around it and into the fuse panel.  Use the twist tie to keep things neat.  Press the trim panel back into place (snaps on).

Step 15:  (if you’re not using a remote display, skip this step) Now run the other wire from the fuse panel to the steering column for the remote display.

Step 17: Loosen (but do not remove) this mounting screw.

Step 18:  Attach the ground wire for the V1 hardwire kit to the screw.  Tighten screw down.

Step 19: Using the provided velcro or double-sided mounting tape; mount the V1 hardwire adapter to the top of the fuse box.

Step 20: Connect the main unit and remote to their labelled ports.  Use zipties to keep the wiring in place.

Step 21:  Now we need to wire into a fuse that has power on ignition/accessory.  I use a fuse in the bottom row, 3rd in from the left (counting empty slots too).  There are two options for connecting to the fuse.

The easiest way is to use an Add-a-circuit.  You attach the red wire from the add-a-circuit to the red wire of the V1 hardwire adapter.  Remove the fuse (mentioned above) from the fuse panel and place it in the lower slot of the add-a-circuit.  Then place a small fuse (3-5A) in the upper slot.  Finally plug the whole unit back in where the original fuse came from.  And you’re done!

The other option is to use a fuse tap, or just push the wire into the fuse slot with the fuse.  The pictures below, the car had a subwoofer remote wire already hooked up to one of the fuses.  So we used the tap provided with the V1 hardwire kit to attach to that wire.  Once attached and plugged back in, you’re ready to go!

Will the “Add-A-Circuit” work when installing a boost gauge? Will the boost gauge be lit at all times?

Yes, you could do that. And yes, the gauge would be lit all the time… and it would not dim with the rest of the interior lights.

    Thanks for the reply.
I do not mind that it will be lit all time, I’d choose that over slicing wires (had bad experience).

If I were to do that for the boost gauge, which slot on the fuse board do I use and which fuse do I put on the fuse holder? My fuse holder comes with 3, 5, 7.5, 10A fuses.

    Thanks.
